Front-in-Amsterdam is the first Amsterdam edition of the front-in-X conference series. The conference for front-end software development (think html, css and javascript) will take place on Friday August 28th. We interviewed organizer Eduardo Shiota Yasuda to learn more about the upcoming conference.

Is this the first frontend code conference in Amsterdam/Europe/World?

There are already several great front-end-focused conferences in the world, including Fronteers (Amsterdam), From the Front (Italy), and An Event Apart (US). But when we decided to organise Front in Amsterdam, we wanted to put the spotlight on the community by offering great content, a chance to bring new people to the stage through our Call for Speakers. We found a great location with an affordable price.

Why did you decide to organize another conference?

We felt there was room for a new event, with a simple format, focused on having a welcoming environment to the community. All of the organisers came from Brazil, where local events called “Front in [name of the city]” united the country’s web developers, sharing knowledge among all professionals in the front-end area, and growing the community as a whole. We wanted to bring the same concept to Amsterdam.

Why Amsterdam?

All the organisers work here, and we feel that Amsterdam is not only a multi-cultural capital, it has become a leading technology hub in Europe. It is the perfect location to promote exciting projects to people who work with the Web. You can find inspiration and creativity flowing everywhere across the city.

What was the biggest challenge in getting the event off the ground?

As a new conference, the biggest challenge was spreading the word and getting people to believe that we can host such a quality event. Thankfully, we have the support of incredible speakers like Zoe Gillenwater (booking.com), Lucas from Lucasfonts and Jörn Zaefferer from jquery. They accepted our invitation from the beginning to share the stage with us. We also had the strong backing of our sponsors and partners, guaranteeing we’ll be able to provide an amazing day for this growing community.

Do you believe the front-end landscape is changing? What trends do you see?

We believe the front-end landscape is maturing. In the last few years, we saw tools like task runners, package managers, pre-processors, and uncountable frameworks take a place in our daily work. The JavaScript broke the boundaries of the browser and went to the server and the Internet of Things. The Design on the web is also maturing, with guidelines like Google’s Material Design. The desktop is only one of the many ways to access the web.

The biggest challenge now is choosing the best solutions, while keeping up with all innovations. Knowing HTML, basic CSS and a bit of design just won’t cut it anymore: as we move towards a ubiquitous Web, we’ll have to worry about the maintainability, responsiveness and scalability of our work.

Which speaker are you most looking forward to?

All of our speakers will give amazing presentations, so it is really hard to pick just one. 🙂
In my (Eduardo Shiota’s) personal opinion, I’m really looking forward to Denis Radin’s presentation about animations, WebGL, and building interfaces for mobile and TV devices. It shows exactly one of front-end’s trends: the move of Web technologies from the browser to mobile devices and into the living room.

I see your employer Booking is the main sponsor. Why are they sponsoring this? What do they hope to achieve?

Booking.com see in us an opportunity to establish themselves as the web technology reference in Amsterdam. It’s a fast-growing company and they’re looking for the best and most engaged front-end developers around to help scale their business.

IT Security is becoming more important, also in NL with The Hague Security Delta. Do you have any speakers covering that?

Unfortunately, we don’t have any speakers talking about IT security this year. But we definitelty see the importance of the theme. We hope in the future to get many more proposals about security in the web environment. Keep an eye on future editions!
