Dutch baggage handling company Type22 has been acquired by French company SITA, a global IT provider to the air transport industry, based in Geneva.
Type22 was co-founded by Roel Reijnen in 2006, as a spin-off from the Delft University of Technology, and is part of incubator YES!Delft.
The company develops baggage handling products, including a ‘scan&fly self bag drop’ that is used by airports and airlines worldwide, such as Finland, South-Korea and Malaysia.
The acquisition must strengthen SITA’s position as market leader of end-to-end technology solutions that enhance the passenger experience from curb to arrival hall.
Trend
“According to SITA’s 2015 Airport IT Trends Survey, 62 percent of passengers will use self-service bag drop by 2017″, says Francesco Violante, ceo of SITA. “Recognizing the tremendous potential in the market made acquiring Type22 a logical next step that will make us leaders in self-service bag drop integrated with common-use systems.”
Type22 will be its own legal entity under the SITA group. “We will retain the expertise of the team led by our current managing director Roel Reijnen and will be creating a new ‘self-bag-drop center of excellence’, based in The Netherlands”, declares Type22.
